The more I learn about nutrition, the more I realize how complex we Americans are trying to make it and how incredibly simple it is. It’s NUTRITION, not a diet, not a fad, not just exercise, not something you do for 3 months…it is YOUR life and YOU are in control. I wanted to send everyone something to help you feel like you are in control of you and your family’s health. Oftentimes, we are told it is in our genes and we are S.O.L. It is such a small % of our genes causing disease and a HUGE % of lifestyle choices causing disease. I just want to list some things for you to think about and maybe post on the fridge. *Don’t Diet, just take steps every day and year towards eating healthier. Make a point to always be moving forward on the nutrition and health continuum rather than stagnant or backwards. Our journey has been 6 years in the making and we are still making new choices and educating ourselves constantly. *Read Labels! This has been the biggest eye opener for me. Avoid foods with HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP, HYDROGENATED OILS, NITRATES, AND COLOR DYES (like red 40). These chemicals are VERY bad for you and especially the kiddos. Many of the ingredients that are “normal” in the US are outlawed in Europe. Trans Fats are illegal in NY. *Eat LOTS of FIBER…fruits and veggies, beans, nuts and whole grains. A high fiber diet reduces diseases and makes you more full. You are able to eat much more food and still lose weight when it is high fiber foods. *Buy less processed products and more FOOD. When you read ingredients, avoid the ones with lots of stuff you can’t pronounce. Buy products with only a few ingredients. Grocery shopping will take a bit longer the 1st few times. *Athletes need to actually eat healthier due to all the Oxidative Stress they put their bodies under. We need ANTIOXIDANTS in fruits and veggies to combat the stress. The recommendation is 7-13 servings a day! *Shop for, plan for and pack healthy snacks the night before. We often times eat “on the go food” that is not nutritionally sound. Raw nuts, fruit, celery and PB, healthy fruit and nut bars… *Educate yourself by reading books and attending nutrition lectures. The more you know, the more empowered you are and the more motivated you are to make changes.
